Dr K.Vijaya Lakshmi is Vice President of Development Alternatives Group, responsible for technology innovation and research at the Group. A chemist by training, Dr. Vijaya Lakshmi’s main focus and achievements are in the area of water quality management, associated with development and application of innovative technologies that address the problems of women. Dr Vijaya Lakshmi realised that 90 per cent of water borne diseases are due to coli form bacteria that largely affect women and children in rural areas and urban slums. She took upon herself the challenge of demystifying the science of water quality monitoring and management. She has been the recipient of the National Award for Women's Development through application of Science and Technology for the year 2007 granted by the President of India. She has guided the development of testing kits and water filters and that can be taken to villages in India. She is an advisor to the India Water Partnership and has been the Asia regional member in the Global Water Partnership forum.
Dr. Vijaya Lakshmi has been associated with IISD, the key advisory committee member for ISO, advising on CSR standard development. She has guided the design and implementation of multi-stakeholder processes for setting up of voluntary standards for Corporates, especially in the lead acid battery and hospitality sectors.She has expertise in Environmental Management Systems (EMS) planning, design and facilitation of implementation, Environment Impact Assessments (EIA), Environmental Monitoring and Prediction (EMP) studies.
At Development Alternatives, Dr. Vijaya Lakshmi is responsible for strengthening the organisation’s capability in designing green solutions for the brown issues of the environment. These include solutions for air, water and land pollution due to industrialization and urbanization and the related socio-economic implications on people and ecosystems. Under her leadership, the institution has developed capacities for addressing the environmental and social issues of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and large Corporates. She is also responsible for promoting the NGO-Business and other stakeholder partnership models.
In addition, Dr. Vijaya Lakshmi leads the resource efficiency team at the Development Alternatives Group and provides guidance to innovation in technology and delivery models for waste to wealth interventions.
